Presidents as Candidates (Politics and Policy in American Institutions Series: Vol1): Inside the White House for the Presidential Campaign

FROM THE PUBLISHER

How does a re-election campaign affect the way a President makes policy? How does already being in the White House affect the way a candidate campaigns? Presidents as Candidates compares eight reelection campaigns from Eisenhower to Clinton, identifying all the differences and similarities.

SYNOPSIS

Much of the academic literature on presidential campaigns explores the question from the vantage point of those attempting to gain the White House, yet little has been written about how sitting presidents campaigns for reelection, according to Tenpas (Brookings Institution). She seeks to fill this lacuna by examining and differentiating among eight campaigns (Eisenhower 1956, Johnson 1964, Nixon 1972, Ford 1976, Carter 1980, Reagan 1984, Bush 1992, and Clinton 1996). She describes how, in the years following Eisenhower, control of the campaign has shifted from the party organization to the White House and explores the implications of this fact for the operation of White House governance. Separate examinations of the roles of the national party organizations and the functions of campaign committees follow. This is a paperbound edition of a work first published in 1997. FROM THE CRITICS

Booknews

Analyzes how sitting chief executives of the US prepare for impending elections, manage a nationwide campaign, and fulfill presidential duties, hopefully without ending up in court or getting into a war by accident. Taking evidence from eight campaigns between Eisenhower's second in 1956 and Clinton's second in 1996, describes three types of White House campaigns as victorious, defeated, and takeover. Based on interviews as well as documents and published literature. The series will explore the interaction of institutions within the context of public policy making.
