Forget plot, forget characterization. Sit back and enjoy the zaniest mix of punning and wacky names since Asprin's last Phule book. Meet Sushi, the Rev. who worships Elvis, the King-Okidata, Do-Wop, rebel leader Le Duc Taep, a seven-foot high warthog-like creature called Tusk-anini, and the villain, General Blitzkrieg. Treasure lines, such as "You're offering me a face worse than debt," when the Rev. tells Do-Wop he will have to undergo plastic surgery to look like Elvis if he wants the Rev. to pay his debts. Willard Phule, a.k.a. Captain Jester or Captain Scaramouche, is the commander of Omega Company, the Space Legion's dumping ground for incompetents and malcontents. His unorthodox methods work very well as he has molded his unit into a crack fighting team that handles assignments as diverse as running a gambling resort on one world and peacekeeping on another. Who else would succeed in restoring peace by bankrolling the rebels' attempts to build the greatest roller coaster in the galaxy, setting off fierce competition between the rebels and the government to build the biggest and the best? Readers will enjoy seeing how Phule makes fools of the Internal Revenue Service, General Blitzkrieg, and other assorted incompetents, and have a good laugh at the same time. Purchase for high school and public libraries where there is an appreciation for the Phule series and outrageous punning.
