The King Betrayed (Sword, the Ring and the Chalice Series)

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The Sword, The Ring, and The Chalice trilogy ensnared readers in its web of fantasy and suspense. The Queen's Gambit--called "powerful" and "romantic" by Midwest Book Review--added more layers to the tale. Now, national bestselling author Deborah Chester continues the saga of royal intrigue, myth, and magic. . .

The King Betrayed

It has been seven years since the half-elven Dain took his rightful place upon the throne of Nether, with the warrior-woman Alexeika beside him. Their rule has ushered in an unprecedented era of peace and prosperity. . .

But Dain's legacy is not secure. His many enemies have formed an unholy alliance and put into motion a plot--fueled by sword and sorcery--which could shatter his life forever and destroy the one thing that has sustained him throughout the years: the love of his Queen Alexeika. . .

FROM THE CRITICS

KLIATT

The second in a fantasy trilogy, this volume focuses on Pheresa, a young royal aspiring to the throne. Her husband dead, she hopes to be designated as the heir. Factions question her ability, with the religious plotting their own rise and a faraway fop relative insinuating himself to get the position. Pheresa has to marry the womanizing fop in order to get in line for the crown, and finally finds herself queen after the king is murdered. When invaders take over the palace, pregnant Pheresa escapes, only to discover that her husband has named her a traitor. Even old friends do not come to her aid. Pheresa has to mature quickly as a ruler￯﾿ᄑand determine who are her real supporters. While it is helpful to have read the first volume in the series, the plot is clear and complex enough to engage the reader. Writing is smooth, and the characters are accessible, though sometimes predictable. A solid read. (Sword, Ring, and Chalice trilogy, book 2).
