Reviewer: Hari Polenakovik, MD (Wright State University:Division of Infectious Diseases)Description: This abbreviated book of tropical infectious diseases covers the most important aspects of tropical medicine. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a practical overview of the core elements of tropical infectious diseases. Audience: According to the editors, this is meant to be the first book that a busy practitioner will consult when confronted with a patient with probable tropical infectious disease. The authors are leading authorities in the field of tropical medicine and the book's style is simple and clear, so will serve well students, residents, and practicing physicians. Features: The book is organized in two sections. The first deals with the approach to the patient with specific clinical syndromes attributed to various tropical infectious diseases and offers pretravel advice. The second is the pathogens section. The greatest strengths of the book are the diagrams depicting the life cycle of the parasites and the corresponding clinical features in the human host, as well as ample use of tables. The book ends with a comprehensive appendix detailing the recommended treatments for almost all of the tropical infectious diseases. Shortcomings of the book are the lack of color art, older references, and, inherent in all multiauthored texts, the variable length of the chapters. Assessment: This is a concise yet comprehensive text of tropical medicine suited for practitioners caring for patients with tropical infectious diseases. Despite its highly specialized content, it is easy to read and is not overwhelming. It should be on the shelf of all physicians encountering patients with tropical infectious diseases.
