Reviewer: Brian E. Moore, M.D., M.Ed. (University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center)Description: This is a comprehensive guide for the making of a pathologic diagnosis, from the submission of specimens to the preparation of the final report. Purpose: The intent was to produce an all-purpose survival guide for the beginning surgical pathologist. This is a needed resource, successfully rendered. Audience: The audience is pathology residents. Features: This manual boils down the vast discipline of surgical pathology to the essential points that every resident needs to know. The reader is guided through the process of handling a pathologic specimen, starting with gross dissection and proceeding to histological examination, application of special stains, and development of a differential diagnosis. Part I covers general topics such as the triage of tissue in the frozen section suite. Part II covers particular specimen types, such as lymph nodes, hernia sacs, and even gun bullets. Advice is tailored to each specimen type, including alternative sample dictations and suggested microscopic sections. Assessment: The manual was developed informally over several years for the benefit of the residents of Brigham and Woman's Hospital. Now the cumulative effort of numerous attendings, residents, and technicians is made available to all residents through this publication. It lives up to the promise of being a one-stop reference for the pathology resident. It is a lean, yet surprisingly complete, compendium of anatomic pathology essentials. Perhaps the only weakness is a paucity of diagrams to go with the gross dissection instructions, making some of the instructions difficult to follow. But overall this is a truly outstanding manual that fills an important need for the beginning pathologist.
