FROM THE CRITICS

VOYA

In Earth's future, the Union armies of North America and the Neo-Soviet forces, made up of irradiated mutant soldiers, are on the brink of nuclear war when an unknown force begins to wreak havoc on Earth. This Maelstrom, as it comes to be known, pulls the Earth and Moon out of the known universe. Humans now must survive in a place where the laws of physics do not seem to apply. This first entry in the VOR: The Maelstrom series purports to establish the beginning of Earth's journey into the Maelstrom. Unfortunately Coleman gets too bogged down in the details of a battle between a Union assault group and a Neo-Soviet troop. Even his characters do not seem to notice that Earth has been sucked into the Maelstrom, except for making an occasional comment about odd plant life or inexplicable land formations. A research station on the Moon should provide the setting for explaining the Maelstrom and its effects, but scenes there mostly focus on the loyalties of a Neo-Soviet scout. Teens who enjoy battle-driven science fiction probably will not mind the confusion, and there are plenty of battle scenes to keep them reading. Those gamers who play the miniatures game on which the books are based also will enjoy this title. On the whole, though, there are too many characters and too much switching from scene to scene, making the already convoluted plot even harder to follow.
