FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Catherine Campbell Wright

How does it really feel to be marooned? What do pirates do when they're not robbing ships, burying treasure and counting their loot? This book, from the "All Aboard" series, offers children a fascinating and informational look into the life of a pirate. It is written in simple and readable text, accompanied by colorful, realistic illustrations. Readers learn just how a pirate captain plans his attacks, how each pirate ship has its own unique Jolly Roger flag, and where several lost treasures are supposedly buried. There's no mention of death or bodily injury inflicted on the victims, and the pirate life is portrayed as daring, thrilling, almost enchanting, but it works for young readers. Despite a bit of glossing over, the facts are effectively presented and children will certainly come away with new information about pirates and their history.
