FROM THE CRITICS
KLIATT - Donna Scanlon
The cover of this hefty paperback promises "25 Stories of That Most Magical Vessel," and one can't help wonder how there could be that many variations on the theme of the Holy Grail. By the end, one wonders how many more there could be. Remarkably, each author has a different take on the story, from the dramatic interpretation of the story of "The Feast of the Fisher King" by Diana L. Paxson to the delightful tongue-in-cheek banality of Neil Gaiman's "Chivalry." Certainly the stories vary in quality or appeal, although overall, they are consistently well written, and there is certainly something here to please any taste. An afterword by Fritz Leiber caps the collection beautifully. The only thing missing is the customary information on the authors, particularly the authors who are less well known, but otherwise, this anthology is a worthy and welcome addition to the shelves. Library Journal
From Neil Gaiman's story of a housewife's encounter with a Knight of the Round Table (``Chivalry'') to Brad Strickland's cautionary tale of covetousness and human foibles (``The Gift of Gilthaliad''), the 25 stories and poems that comprise this collection of Grail-inspired fiction represent a strong showing from a host of celebrated fantasy and sf authors. First published in a limited edition, this volume (the first in a two-part series) explores broad and literal interpretations of one of literature's most enduring legends. Suitable for fantasy and short story collections.
