Book Description
An internationally acclaimed painter, Howard Hodgkin is also a major and highly original maker of prints. This is the first ever comprehensive survey and catalogue raisonné of Hodgkin's printsmore than 140 works made since 1953. An interview with the artist reveals his attitudes toward printmaking as an altogether different process from painting: neither medium is used to imitate the other, nor do they reflect on each other. Compared to the rich, condensed intensity of the paintings, his prints have a broad, expansive quality. Hodgkin's working methods are also discussed. He never collaborates in the actual printing process himself, but gives very detailed instructions: his interest is primarily in the decisions that lead to the production of a mark, not in the act of making that mark. Essays by Liesbeth Heenk, a print expert who works for Sotheby's in Holland and Nan Rosenthal, Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, shed light on the prints, their genesis and development, and on the artist's innovative working habits and his ideas about printmaking. A fully illustrated catalogue raisonné, a chronology, an extensive bibliography, and a list of solo and group exhibitions complete this definitive publication. 202 illustrations in color and duotone.
Howard Hodgkin Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne FROM THE PUBLISHER
"Howard Hodgkin's prints represent an extraordinary body of work, a parallel and very different achievement from his paintings. They have been internationally celebrated and passionately collected, but never brought together, until now. This first ever comprehensive survey and catalogue raisonne, compiled by Liesbeth Heenk, includes a major essay by Nan Rosenthal, Senior Consultant in the Department of Modern Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York." With over eighty colour plates and a fully illustrated catalogue raisonne, plus a chronology, an extensive bibliography and a list of solo and group exhibitions, this is the definitive, long awaited celebration of the most popular area of this artist's work.
FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
A painter known for abstractions that are developed with multiple layers of paint, English artist Howard Hodgkin (b. 1932) has also been active for more than four decades in various methods of printmaking, including lithograph, silkscreen, intaglio, and mixed processes. His paintings are well documented, but until now little has been available on his printmaking. This is in fact the only complete book on the subject. A print specialist at Sotheby's in the Netherlands, Heenk here provides exhaustive documentation for each print made from 1953 to 2002, including methods used, paper types, and related bibliographic citations. Many of the prints are captured in large color reproductions, including 126 duotone and 83 color illustrations. Heenk thoughtfully compares the artist's paintings and his prints and also includes the transcript of her interview with Hodgkin, which discusses the relationships between the two artistic processes. A chronology of Hodgkin's life and a history of print exhibitions round out this topnotch, comprehensive book. Highly recommended for academic and specialized art collections.-Eric Linderman, East Cleveland P.L., OH Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
