Thoraine Jordan always knew she was different. Not only was her name derived from a tenth century viking, but she didn't resemble anyone else in her family. Her mother, Ruby, had told her many years earlier of a time travel experience and swore that Thoraine had been conceived during that century and that she had also given birth during that time period to two sons. But was that possible? Surely her mother had been mistaken. Did she really belong in this century, or of a time past? She needed to find answers. A pilgrimage to York with her mother brought her to the Jorvik Viking Centre. Built on the sight of the Coppergate archaelogical dig, and the grounds of the Battle of Brunanburg, the pilgrimage only confirmed what Ruby felt. Rain, a pacifist, abhorred the violence and war and could not understand why she was so drawn to the museum that housed the artifacts and remnants of that war. A bump on the head during a solo visit has her waking up in 937 A.D. in the midst of the Battle of Brunanburg. She could not understand how or why it happened, but she knows she was sent there on a mission. Then she sees Selik, a Norse God. Taking her hostage was his only solution, as she was nothing like he had ever seen and feared her the enemy. But, her sharp tongue and inability to be frightened by him only made him beleive she was not from his world. His crude and callous ways only fuel her drive to help him. His manner had not always been so harsh, but the death of his wife and child years earlier by the Saxons had left him uncaring and unfeeling. Until now. Her mission, she discovered was to save him. If not from the Saxons, then from himself. Her twentieth century logic and training as a doctor scares and amuses him and although he uses harsh words to keep his feelings for her at bay, she knows she cannot give up, for giving up would mean certain death for Selik. Her modern upbringing and his tenth century beliefs lend itself for some interesting and colorful scenes between the two. Betraying his trust, she pits herself against everything he fights for, for the sake of love. While the battles on the fields rage, so do their feelings for each other. Will their stubborness be overcome by the powerful force of a timeless love?Take a Norse God, a beautiful heroine, add a dash of time travel and you have the makings of a great novel by Sandra Hill. Ms. Hill not only takes us to the tenth century, but into the hearts of two characters you will remember long after you finish this enticing and riveting book. A sweeping, dramatic tale of timeless love.Donna Arcand -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved
