FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Set up like real reference books this series entitled "Harvesttime" is a subset of the larger series of "Welcome Books." In each book, young readers will find a table of contents, the text and accompanying pictures, a list of new words, along with their definitions, that were highlighted in the text, and a page with a few references to books and a web site to find out more on the topic. The final page contains an index and a very brief write-up about the author and the reading consultants who reviewed the text. The text is a compilation of declarative sentences some of which are a bit banal and don't really tell the reader much. Readers do learn that tomatoes grow from seeds and that they are planted in large fields—but the picture of the supposed seeds being planted really wasn't that helpful. Saying that "Farmers pick tomatoes when it is warm outside" does not tell much. Also showing tomatoes on pizza and pasta is good, but the text could have explained that they are used in sauces for pasta and pizza. The stock photos that fill each page are appropriate to the text, and very young and new readers will feel a sense of accomplishment having completed the straightforward text and looked at the photographs. 2004, Scholastic, Ages 3 to 6.
