John Wesley Powell was a soldier, a scientist, and an explorer. Despite losing part of his right arm in battle during the Civil War, Powell led the first expeditions to explore the Green and Colorado Rivers. During his expeditions, Powell studied the lands and peoples he encountered along the way. Later, he served as director of the Bureau of Ethnology and as director of the U.S. Geological Survey.
