   Book Review

Perhaps the most famous of Lawrence's novels, the 1928 Lady Chatterley's Lover is no longer distinguished for the once-shockingly explicit treatment of its subject matter--the adulterous affair between a sexually unfulfilled upper-class married woman and the game keeper who works for the estate owned by her wheelchaired husband. Now that we're used to reading about sex, and seeing it in the movies, it's apparent that the novel is memorable for better reasons: namely, that Lawrence was a masterful and lyrical writer, whose story takes us bodily into the world of its characters.

From AudioFile
Lawrence's classic tale of love and discovery comes alive in this audio presentation. Lady Chatterley is trapped in an unhappy marriage with a husband who is paralyzed physically and emotionally. Jill Daly reads in a quiet tone which ebbs and flows with the excitement of the characters. The indecisiveness of Lady Chatterley, the callousness of her husband, the persuasiveness of her lover--all are portrayed in a quiet, even voice until the climactic end. The abridgment is an excellent taste of D.H. Lawrence. Some language and imagery are explicit. M.B.K. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Lady Chatterley's Lover

FROM OUR EDITORS

Lawrence's frank portrayal of an extramarital affair and the explicit sexual explorations of the central characters caused this controversial book, now considered a masterpiece, to be banned as pornography until 1960.

ANNOTATION

Lawrence's classic explores the themes of inhumanity, love, and need -- a potent mixture that kept the book banned in England until the early 1960s.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Inspired by the long-standing affair between Frieda, Lawrence's German wife, and an Italian peasant who eventually became her third husband, Lady Chatterley's Lover is the story of Constance Chatterley, who, while trapped in an unhappy marriage to an aristocratic mine owner whose war wounds have left him paralyzed and impotent, has an affair with Mellors, the gamekeeper.

SYNOPSIS

Bold, passionate, and erotic, Lady Chaterley's Lover is a truly classic novel of the twentieth century.

Trapped in a rigid aristocractic marriage and sequestered away on the Chatterley estate, Constnce Chattereley is irresistibly drawn to Mellors, the gamekeeper, whose unihibited sexuality and common touch provide a welcom panacea to her husband's neglect. Lyric and beautiful, D.H. Lawrence's paean to sexual love imprisoned by sterile intellectualism and class consciousness has earned its place as one of the most sensual stories ever told.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Lawrence was concerned with one end: to reveal how love, how a relationship between a man and a woman can be most touching and beautiful, but only if it is unihibited and total. — Alfred Breit

Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. — Jonathan Lyons
