From Publishers Weekly
In this action-packed series launch, the author of the Death on Demand mysteries introduces Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins, a widowed former reporter whose investigative instincts have not been blunted by retirement. Forty years after their love affair ended, media magnate Chase Prescott calls "Henrie O" for help in figuring out who tried to kill him with poisoned candy. He invites her and all those he suspects of wanting him dead to his private island off the coast of South Carolina, hoping that Henrie will be able to ferret out the identity of his would-be killer. While a brewing hurricane threatens the island, Henrie faces a full roster of suspects: Chase's young third wife; his second wife's sister; his idealistic sons; a sly secretary; the purported heir-apparent to Chase's empire; his firm's general counsel; and a surly, abusive employee. Feisty and incisive, Henrie tries valiantly to determine who is behind further attempts on Chase's life while the storm, a would-be killer of a different sort, gathers. Two people are murdered; the hurricane shears wings off the mansion and redoubtable Henrie figures out the motives and the murderer in a tumultuous resolution. From Library Journal
The creator of the popular Annie Darling series introduces an older sleuth of forceful charm and infinite wisdom. Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins, known affectionately as Henrie O, writes novels after working 50 years as a journalist. Longtime friend Chase Prescott, multimillionaire media magnate, begs her to visit his private island near Charleston so that she can deduce which of the people there wants him dead. Hart handles the classic situation (isolated mansion full of colorful suspects) with panache, controlling the melodrama but utilizing monster Hurricane Derek to great effect as plot and storm peak together. A surefire winner. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 5/15/93.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
After 30 years of noncommunication, investigative reporter- novelist Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins (``call me Henrie O'') gets a call from a long-ago lover--media biggie Chase Prescott of Prescott Enterprises. Chase is now married to waiflike Miranda, his third; is having mega money problems--and someone is trying to kill him. He wants Henrie O to join him on his private island off the Carolina coast, along with those present at the time of the attempt on his life (poisoned chocolates). The group includes his son Roger, stepson Haskell, lawyer Trevor Dunnaway, secretary Burton Andrews, actress Valerie St. Vincent, company executive Lyle Steadman, and three domestics. Chase is certain Henrie O's deductive powers will ferret out the killer. No modest violet, she agrees. But Chase dies, of course, in an elaborately devised manner, and just ahead of a violent tropical storm that rips the island and and its lush homes-of-the-rich-and-famous to shreds. An overblown saga--with a plot that, when finally revealed in all its silly ramifications, defies belief; a tiresomely self- congratulatory new sleuth; and mostly cardboard characters. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Dead Man's Island (A Henrie O Mystery)

ANNOTATION

Hart, whose fanciful Death on Demand series captured every major mystery award, debuts a sassy, sixtyish new sleuth: former journalist, crime writer and amateur detective Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins. When a media magnate narrowly escapes a murder plot, he enlists Henrie O's help in uncovering the would-be murderer.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Few men would respond to an attempt on their life with an invitation to the killer to try again. But arrogant, daredevil media magnate Chase Prescott has done just that, while issuing an urgent summons to the one person he trusts to point out the would-be murderer...his long-ago colleague and lover, retired newshound Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins. After a lifetime covering disasters and revolutions, murders and public scandals, Henrie O is more than content to confine her energy to writing mysteries. And her feelings of unease only increase when she arrives at Chase's opulent house on his private island off the South Carolina coast - an island that has more than earned its name. It seems that Chase, with his usual high-octane charm and confidence, never called the police when cyanide-laced candy nearly killed him in his New York home. Instead, he has assembled on Dead Man's Island everyone who could have planted the lethal dose: Miranda, his lovely unstable young wife; Haskell Lee, his sullen stepson whose dreams Chase will not finance; his son Roger Prescott, afire for Prescott Communications to cover environmental and social issues instead of capitalist concerns; and his platinum-haired ex-sister-in-law Valerie St. Vincent, a beauty desperate for the money to stage her Broadway comeback. And then there is Chase's staff - from his Type A heir apparent to his toady of a secretary - who have their own secret ambitions. When Chase barely escapes a murderous spray of bullets on a secluded sandy beach, Henrie O unearths a will, an insurance policy, and a scurrilous unauthorized biography that could give any one of Chase's intimate circle an even graver motive for murder. But which one? Now Henrie O's sharp writer's mind must work overtime, as a killer hurricane sweeps up from Cuba to maroon the lot of them in this vacation hell...where the trappings of luxury are soon put to deadly use, and where the secrets of the past threaten to engulf them all.

BookList - Emily Melton

Agatha Christie aficionados will recognize Miss Marple's double in Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins, Hart's 60-something sleuth. The setting is America rather than Miss Marple's sleepy English village, and Henrietta, a well-traveled retired journalist-turned-thriller-writer, is a perkier, more "with-it" version of Christie's heroine. But "Henrie O," as she's known to her friends, is every bit as adept at corraling criminals, unmasking murderers, and solving crimes as the intrepid Miss Marple. In this story, Henrie O is asked by her old friend and former flame Chase Prescott, now a wealthy media mogul, to discover who's out to kill him. He invites all the suspects to his isolated private island off the coast of South Carolina, and while hurricanes rage, people are electrocuted in hot tubs, and hidden assassins attack, Henrie does her darnedest to find the killer. The plot is strictly formula (with a few nice surprises), the characters include the standard assortment of goodies and baddies, and the solution is really no surprise. Even so, this book has the same kind of pleasantly entertaining appeal as the Miss Marple stories and should prove popular with Christie fans.
