FROM THE CRITICS
VOYA
The author of The Buffy Chronicles (Three Rivers Press, 1998) and The Unofficial X-Files Companion (Crown, 1995) has produced another unauthorized tie-in to a popular television show. Amid cries of Satanism and fears that an Aaron Spelling treatment of witchcraft would stir up anti-Wiccan feelings, Charmed premiered in 1998 and has been going strong ever since, with opposition gradually fading. True, there are belly buttons and biceps, supernatural powers, demons and ghosts, and shape-shifters. There also is a core of basic Wiccan beliefs, including an altar, the celebration of sabbat, an athame for directing energy, The Book of Shadows (a general title for a Wiccan's magical workbook), triple powers that have special properties, and the Wiccan Rede, "An it harm none, do what ye will." The second half of this book explores the magical significance and Wiccan traditions of each episode during the first two years of the show, followed by bloopers and a filmography of the actresses and actors. Also explored are the basic foundations of witchcraft; the special powers of plants, crystals, and candles; how to set up a place in which to practice magic; the tools of the trade; and finally how to practice various spells and divination techniques. As a how-to book, workbook pages of Personal Growth Exercises are included. Because witchcraft is a perennial favorite, not only fans of the show but also those interested in exploring the basic tenets of witchcraft are in for a treat. Illus.
