FROM THE CRITICS

Mark E. Hroncich

This abbreviated textbook of internal medicine provides an overview of the pathophysiology, presentation, and evaluation of internal medicine problems. This third edition replaces the 1990 edition. The purpose is to provide a concise yet comprehensive text of internal medicine topics. The book accomplishes this goal well. This book fulfills a need for internal medicine students at certain levels of training. This book is written for third- and fourth-year medical students and first- and second-year internal medicine residents. The editors target this audience well with contributors who are credible authorities on the subjects. The book is well organized and is without excessive overlap. The tables and illustrations are liberally provided and enhance and simplify the text. The references are very current and of good quality. The organization of the book makes information easy to find. This is a readable textbook of medicine. It is well written and comprehensive. The chapters of the book are rounded out with excellent tables and charts. The references are strong and current. It would be an excellent accompaniment to a student on a junior or senior medicine clerkship or an early house officer on a medicine rotation. There is enough new material in this book to warrant replacing previous editions.

This is the fourth edition of an abbreviated text of internal medicine that provides an overview of the pathophysiology, presentation, and evaluation of internal medicine problems. Its purpose is to provide a concise summary of the core elements of internal medicine. The book admirably serves its most likely audience of students and medical residents. It should also be a useful reference for non-internal medicine practitioners. The standard Cecil Textbook of Medicine or one of its counterparts (e.g. Harrison's) would better serve internists and specialists. The book is organized by organ system, covering the majority of diseases encountered in the practice of internal medicine. Most sections begin with a general description of common manifestations of diseases of that system. Many sections present a short review of physiology and a summary of diagnostic tests. The chapters end with a list of references that are short and often old. Readers will need to refer to the larger Cecil for a useful list. Cecil Essentials is an excellent choice for medical students and internal medicine residents. The scope is broad, but it is easy to read and not overwhelming. It is among the top choices of medical students with whom I have worked. It would be an excellent addition for those learning internal medicine.
