From Book News, Inc.
Intended for cardiology fellows, this textbook introduces the principles of cardiac ultrasound imaging and flow analysis, describes the standard views obtained from each acoustic window, and illustrates the clinical approach to echocardiographic diagnosis for ten disease categories. Example echocardiographic images and Doppler data show typical and unusual findings in patients with each disease process. The third edition adds a chapter on stress, contrast, and three- dimensional echocardiography. Otto teaches at the University of Washington.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Description
The new edition of Dr. Otto's benchmark text of echocardiography is a must for everyone learning echo for the first time, or re-learning the essential concepts. Dr. Otto's writing style engages the reader and makes difficult concepts easy to understand. New to this edition is a discussion of new echo techniques including contrast and 3D and how they fit into the echo practice. All echo images are new to this edition and are complemented by new full color drawings of heart structures and physical orientation. Each chapter includes a practical outline called The Echo Exam, ideal for understanding the use of echo and how to understand the outcomes.

FROM THE CRITICS
Eric K. Louie
This book provides a concise, well organized introduction to the fields of echocardiographic imaging and Doppler blood flow analysis that offers much of the basic information needed by the beginning student of echocardiography. It makes no pretense at being exhaustive in its coverage, but nonetheless, it is remarkably thorough in the major areas of clinical interest. The integration of technical aspects of ultrasound imaging, physiologic principles, and clinical application is achieved in a seamless and intuitive transition that makes it a delight to read for the clinical echocardiographer. The text serves its purpose well by providing a manageable presentation of basic echocardiography for the trainee in cardiology and the nonphysician sonographer. Much of the technical presentation and pathophysiologic explanations will still be of great interest to more experienced clinicians and other physicians who interpret echocardiographic techniques (e.g., anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, radiologists). The text is well illustrated with clear color plates and excellent reproductions of gray scale. Particularly valuable from a didactic standpoint are the clear line drawings and schematics. The usefulness of the reference lists is especially enhanced by informative annotations. This is a well-conceived text that effectively integrates physical principles, pathophysiology, and a clinical approach to echocardiography that would be of great practical use to both new students of echocardiography and more experienced echocardiographers looking for a refreshing review.
