This is a comprehensive textbook including basic science, clinical aspects, diagnostic procedures, and management guidelines for dermatologic diseases of dogs, cats, pet rodents, rabbits, and ferrets. This fifth edition has been extensively revised to reflect the many advances in veterinary dermatology over the past six years (the fourth edition was published in 1989). The purpose is to present up-to-date information in an international treatise covering all aspects of small animal dermatology. Dermatology is an important area in small animal practices, and this book meets its goal of providing comprehensive information that is state-of-the-art. This book has a superb combination of in-depth basic science information that will interest students and residents training in dermatology and also practical descriptions of clinical presentations, diagnostic procedures, and management guidelines that will be very useful to practitioners. The authors include two university-affiliated dermatologists and one dermatologist in private specialty practice, all highly respected experts in veterinary dermatology. Pictures are important in dermatology, and this book has many excellent photographs and illustrations. The references are voluminous and up-to-date. The initial table of contents contains only chapter titles; each chapter begins with a more comprehensive chapter outline. The index will help readers in finding subject materials when they are uncertain of what chapter to look in. This new edition contains many new subject areas and also includes new understanding of many diseases where major changes have been made in treatment recommendations. This is an excellent new edition that should beowned and used by all veterinarians in small animal practice.

Reviewer: Karen L. Campbell, DVM, MS, DACVIM, DACVD (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)Description: This updated edition has been expanded by over 300 pages from the previous edition published in 1995. It also includes 70 newly recognized conditions. Purpose: Although not actually stated in the preface, the authors have strived to provide a comprehensive reference including the pathogenesis, clinical appearance, diagnostic approaches, and treatments for dermatological diseases affecting dogs, cats, and pet rodents, rabbits, and ferrets. This is a colossal undertaking as dermatological diseases are present in 20-75 percent of cases seen by small animal practitioners. Audience: The authors are three of the most widely known and respected veterinary dermatologists in the world. Due to their collective knowledge and dedication, the authors have succeeded in producing a textbook that will be useful to students, residents, and small animal practitioners. Features: This edition has been extensively reorganized to improve its usefulness to practitioners. Recommendations for client education have been expanded and detailed treatment information has been moved from the introductory dermatologic therapy chapter to the relevant disease chapters. Many new black-and-white and color illustrations have been added. Each chapter is extensively referenced, making this textbook superior to many databases as a source of bibliographic information. Assessment: This new edition has raised the bar of excellence another notch. It is the most comprehensive and best referenced textbook on small animal dermatology in the world. The extensive revisions and additions of newly recognized diseases and treatment options should make this book a top priority for the libraries of all small animal practitioners.
