New edition of a text that includes current data regarding the progress that has been made in treating leukemia patients in terms of diagnostic techniques, therapeutic measures, and prognosis. The 30 contributions cover the history and biology of leukemia; myelopoiesis and lymphopoiesis; molecular cytogenetics, immunobiology, and epidemiology; causes such as radiation, chemicals, and viruses; diagnosis, classification and assessment of response to treatment; detection of minimal residual disease; management of the disease and complications; pharmacology; transplantation; and various types of leukemia. Illustrated with b&w and color images and charts. Edited by Henderson (emeritus medicine, State U. of New York), T. Andrew Lister (clinical oncology, St. Bartholomew's Hospital) and Mel F. Book Description
An international roster of field-leading experts delivers the seventh edition of the definitive textbook, LEUKEMIA. This classic provides comprehensive guidance on all aspects of leukemia, from etiology and biology to clinical features and therapy. This edition now also provides the molecular basis of several leukemias. It reflects the most exciting period of research in the field in a quarter century, and features information on molecular biology and molecular genetics, as well as biological therapy.

FROM THE CRITICS
Martin S. Tallman
This is the sixth edition of what has become a well-recognized text in leukemia. It is comprehensive in its attempt to cover the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, management, and complications of all types of acute and chronic leukemias. The authors intend to keep abreast of the many rapid changes in the molecular basis of acute leukemia, advances in treatment strategies, cytogenetics, immunophenotyping, and therapeutic strategies, including the role of hematopoietic growth factors and all-trans retinoic acid in acute promyelocytic leukemia. The goals of the authors are well justified; indeed, they meet their objectives fully. This book is written for a broad audience, including students, house officers, and hematologists/oncologists, but it will be very informative for the nonhematologist physician as well. The authors have solicited chapters from leading authorities in their fields, and the text is edited so that there is a logical sequence of topics. The chapters are written in a way that is easy to understand. All chapters have an extensive number of references. There are numerous illustrations that satisfactorily enhance the text. The table of contents and index are similarly easy to use. There are numerous well-reproduced color photomicrographs that add to the overall appearance of the text. The chapter on biologic therapy of leukemia is particularly timely and thorough. This sixth edition will be a useful addition for any institutional or personal library. The authors have succeeded in addressing the many new advances in the field, including our improved ability to use cytogenetics, immunophenotyping, and molecular genetics to understand, classify, and treat thevarious leukemias. The easy readability will make this book particularly useful for house officers and fellows.
