FROM THE CRITICS
Doody Review Services
Reviewer: Francis H. Straus II, MD, MS (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)Description: This new edition of an introductory pathology text includes 9 general principles chapters and 14 systemic pathology chapters. This edition updates the 1992 fifth edition.Purpose: The authors claim extensive revision in the written text and more so in conversion of most black-and-white illustrations into new color pictures. Charts and schematics have also been converted to color. The book emphasizes clinicopathologic correlations and how molecular pathology affects clinical medicine. A new chapter that includes selected common disorders of skin has been added. Pediatric disorders were covered diffusely and are now combined into one chapter called "Genetic and Pediatric Diseases." Laboratory diagnosis of selected heart diseases, endocrine disorders, and genetic diseases has been expanded.Audience: As before, this book is designed for beginning pathology students in a somewhat simpler, shorter format than the widely used medical student text, Pathologic Basis of Disease, by the same authors. This book can be used by medical students, but may be more appropriate for pathology doctoral candidates; paramedical, nursing, or dental students; physician assistants; or public health students. The authors are all experienced and credible.Features: This edition has the same type size, margin size, and number of pages as the fifth edition. There is a chapter outline on each chapter's title page, and there are boldfaced headings dividing the chapter text in the same outline format. Numerousillustrations, tables, and diagrams are placed appropriately in the text with brief legends. Important portions of text are printed on pale green background for emphasis. At the end of each chapter, there is a short list of up-to-date references, mostly review articles with brief content comments. At the back there is a useful 30-page index.Assessment: This book's reputation, careful organization, color illustrations, attractive layout, and succinct, clear expression will maintain its usefulness as a simpler and shorter introductory text in pathology. The new edition is more up-to-date and more understandable with its color additions. It is a good, not watered down, simpler pathology text.
