From Booklist
This British import is marketed as a romantic thriller, but that may be misleading on both counts. Although Melville's spare, compelling prose draws you in, you're never really sure where you're being drawn to, since nothing is as it seems in this tale of international espionage, double agents, and heartless double crosses. Stella opens the door to her husband-- who's been dead for 10 years. Or has he? How does he know so much about her political past? Who is he? Who was she, and who is she now? The armed man virtually moves in, and long stares and pregnant pauses abound while the two conduct a deadly dance and corpses multiply around them. Illusions shatter, and Stella sees herself differently and finds unsuspected reserves of daring and strength, even heartlessness. Mood and tension build in this puzzling, cold-blooded brainteaser. Much is hinted, but all is cloaked in shadow in this challenging and unusual tale for readers with a high tolerance for ambiguity. Whitney Scott
