Norway FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Chris Gill
God dag (goo dahg)! That's "hello" in Norwegian. These twenty-four pages open with "Fast Facts," listing such things as the capital, population, language, size and crops. Maps, the national flag and a description of the currency follow. Individual sections discuss the land, home life, school, food, clothing, animals, sports and holidays. Each of these sections has a full-page picture to illustrate the text on the facing page. The game, Fox & Geese is explained so children can have a go at playing a typical Norwegian game. Seven Norwegian words are translated and shown with their phonetic pronunciations, followed by a glossary, suggested reading and Internet sites, and an index. From fjords to football, reindeer to rokelaks (smoked salmon), the high points are covered. Simple and well-illustrated, this book is a good addition to the classroom for young ones just beginning to explore other countries. The thirty-eight titles in the "Countries of the World" series range from Argentina to Vietnam. Adjo!
