FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Barbara Youngblood

The life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is truly a remarkable story of a rare talent. At the age of three, he taught himself to play the piano and wrote his first concert at six years of age. As you might imagine, he and his sister were popular among the royalty of Europe who sought them out to perform at their palaces and other gatherings. Mozart wrote his first symphony at nine years of age and his first opera at age eleven. It is still an awesome feeling to listen to his music and think how very gifted this young man was as such an early age. The authors have combined artworks of the period that show Mozart's family, homes, palaces, and cities that he visited. The reader can listen to the pieces of music that are mentioned in the book to understand the legacy that this young composer left for the world. Mozart died at the young age of thirty-five, but left music that has survived and is cherished for the world to enjoy. The book contains a timeline of his life, a glossary, index, and books to read to further explore the composer's life. Part of the "Inventors and Creators Series." 2004, KidHaven Press, Ages 12 up.
