FROM THE CRITICS
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-These two books are visually appealing but thin on facts. After one or two introductory chapters about the men, each narrative begins with the birth of its subject and proceeds chronologically thereafter. Each two-page chapter includes two or more black-and-white, sepia-toned, or full-color photos. With so many pictures, there is little room left for text, although captions provide a bit more detail. Each spread also includes a quote from or about the subject. The date charts in the end matter contain information that is not found in the texts. Pratima Mitchell's Gandhi: The Father of Modern India (Oxford, 1998), Demi's Gandhi (McElderry, 2001), and Leonard Everett Fisher's Gandhi (Atheneum, 1995) are better choices. While much less has been written at this age level about the Dalai Lama, the material here is pared so far down that much of it will be meaningless to those who have no background on the subject. Demi's The Dalai Lama (Holt, 1998) is a clearer, more complete picture of this important man.-Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
