SYNOPSIS

God, gold, and glory were the motivators for the 16th-18th century Portuguese expansion into China and Macau, where they were called "barbarian devils." This anthology features 40 annotated excerpts of first-hand accounts of many aspects of this new West-East contact, many translated into English for the first time, mostly by Portuguese travelers, merchants, missionaries, soldiers, and government officials plus some later chroniclers and historians. Among the illustrations are the Ming emperor and empress, a polychrome dish (in color), churchmen, a Cantonese war junk, Chinese dress, and a church and temple in Macau. Includes a basic map of the region and a glossary. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
