Education and Warfare in Europe

FROM THE PUBLISHER

This book explores the ways in which European educational systems influence culture identity ethnicity and politics and may reinforce ethnic or national cleavages, violence and warfare.

SYNOPSIS

Excluding regimes that explicitly glorified war, such as the Nazi regime of Germany, Coulby (Bath Spa U. College, UK) and Jones (U. of London Institute of Education) look at how European education systems maintain and sustain antipathies, nationalisms, and xenophobic attitudes that may increase the potential for violence and wars. Focusing on policies and practices, they look at a number of areas in which schools can improve their pedagogies. Specific chapters argue for the inclusion of competing versions of state histories, the elimination of lessons which support state violence, the inclusion and celebration of diversity within national populations, the inclusion of literature that explores the relationships between peoples of various countries, and the reexamination of militaristic youth movements such as the Boy Scouts and the Young Pioneers.
