True or False? At the beginning f the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln asked Robert E. Lee to lead the Union army.

True! But Lee refused. He was from Virginia, part of the Confederate South. He would not fight with the Union against his home state. Instead, he became a commander in the Confederate army.

He was the son of a hero of the American Revolution.He was called the Gray Fox for his clever battle plans during the Civil War.His favorite horse was named Traveller. Lee rode Traveller through most of the Civil War. When Traveller died, he was buried near Lee in Lexington, Virginia.
