Examining three modes of collective religious interaction at the African American Salem Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, the author seeks to present a phenomenological understanding of the ritual and liturgical experience in the Black church. The author argues that the prayer meeting, the deacon's devotion, and congregational worship correspond to the religious modes of community, communitas, and the cosmos.
