SYNOPSIS

In a book dedicated to teachers "who teach with a beginner's mind," a retired California educator and game developer takes a Zen-influenced view of the profession. Countering the emphasis on standardized tests and textbooks, Spreyer shares insights on the path of teaching with short essays on such topics as dealing with the first day of school, "how to be hated" (by colleagues and students), power in the classroom, "this is boring! and other ego traps," and reasons why one should/should not teach. He suggests books and videos for jazzing up lessons, e.g., Cool math (Maganzini, 1997), Barlowe's guide to extraterrestrials/great aliens from science fiction literature (Barlowe, 1987), and Carl Sagan's Cosmos PBS series.
