Gr. 6-9. This balanced account in the Hot Issues series outlines the long history of attempts to both pass and block effective gun control legislation. The major points by both sides are presented clearly and concisely, with particular emphasis on the historical background of the arguments. Most libraries probably have material that covers the gun control debate. But this has the advantage of being up-to-date, following the issue through the 2000 presidential election. The illustrations are sparse and occasionally random, particularly the maps. But the tables, listing regulations governing gun control in each state, are particularly helpful, as is the balanced list of Web sites and the glossary of gun-related terms. Todd Morning

Gun Control: The Pros and Cons FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature
Gun control is one of the most polarizing political issues in America. Proponents of gun control legislation point to the terribly high murder rate in the United States. Such political advocates of stricter gun laws note that by far the greatest killer of Americans are fellow citizens using guns. Opponents of gun control pinpoint the constitutional reasons why gun owners should continue to have the right to own a firearm. Groups such as the National Rifle Association staunchly oppose any restriction on an individual citizen's right to purchase a handgun or rifle. In this book, the controversial subject of gun control is presented in a very evenhanded manner. The history of gun ownership in America is presented by the author as a starting point for understanding the current controversy. Streissguth then carefully traces the evolution of both pro and con gun control positions. Discussion also turns to the culture of violence that many Americans see evolving within the United States. In the end, the author notes the seeming inability of supporters of either pro or con perspectives to compromise. This unfortunate nexus of conflict is well outlined in this solid depiction of a controversial issue. Part of the "Issues in Focus" series. 2001, Enslow, $20.95. Ages 12 up. Reviewer:Greg M. Romaneck.
