The pre-Hopper convention in American landscape painting was to romanticize every subject. Hopper (1882-1967) broke that dictum: telephone poles and power lines, peeling paint and utilitarian structures are prominent elements in his work. This calendar's selections, courtesy of such institutions as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, show Hopper's interest in residences and scenery; titles include Apartment Houses, Cape Cod Morning, and The Lee Shore.
