Author Biography:

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

A world-class competitive, long distance, and Olympic synchronized swimmer, Katz began writing instructional books following her rehabilitation from a car accident in 1979. In those guides, she covered a wide range of exercise modalities to perform in the pool, including prenatal aquatics. Here taking a holistic approach based on yoga, Pilates, and tai chi movements, she emphasizes stretching and proper breathing for both strength and relaxation. Black-and-white drawings provide step-by-step instructions on performing each move correctly. Katz also outlines sport-specific and more vigorous deep-water routines like treading water, water walking, and jogging and sets aside a chapter to water activities for children. Although Katz's book is well written and thorough, Mimi Rodriguez Adami's Aqua Fitness: The Low-Impact Total Body Fitness Workout covers the same material for the same price, with the bonus of striking color photographs of swimmers demonstrating the exercises. It also includes an innovative beach workout, a glossary of terms, and a useful list of addresses. Either title will provide general collections with a comprehensive and holistic overview of aquatic training, but Aqua Fitness would suffice for those with limited budgets.-Deborah Anne Broocker, Georgia Perimeter Coll., Dunwoody Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
