Iconography and Iconology of Georges de la Tour's Religious Paintings, 1624-1650

SYNOPSIS

This text explores the symbolism in Georges de La Tour's religious paintings. As little information is available about the artist himself, the author centers his thesis on the cultural, historical, and religious atmosphere in which La Tour lived and worked. The paintings discussed are reproduced here in a section of color plates. McClintock teaches French at Midwestern State U. in Texas. The text is based upon his doctoral thesis at Middlebury College.
