FROM THE CRITICS

This textbook is a presentation of adult skeleton fracture treatment and rehabilitation. The purpose is to combine the fields of orthopedic and rehabilitation via the care of fractures. These worthwhile objectives are met for the most part. The book is written for orthopedists, physiatrists, and those residents in training. Physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other professionals will find this work most useful. The principal editor is well known for his other work Physical Examinations of the Spine and Extremities (Prentice Hall, 1976). He is most qualified to edit this book. This book is divided into four sections: Foundation Chapters, Upper Extremity Fractures, Lower Extremity Fractures, and Spine Fractures. In each chapter the focus is on an individual group of fractures, which are covered in a systematic fashion. Emphasis is placed on weekly time zones to stress the changing orthopedic and rehabilitation care until full recovery. A summary box at the end of each chapter is a useful educational tool. Important relevant information about precautions, bone healing stages, and rehabilitation goals is also included. The editors elected to omit pelvic fractures but did a good job covering the spine fractures. Reduction, immobilization, and rehabilitation are the three basic principles of fracture management. In this book all three areas are very well covered. The traditional fracture book usually does not include so much information on rehabilitation. This work adds a very important dimension to the management of fractures. I highly recommend it to orthopedists, physiatrists, and residents of the respected specialties. Also, allied professionalssuch as therapists and nurses can make very good use of this work.
