FROM THE PUBLISHER

Crystal-clear and easy-to-read, this popular text focuses on the essential pathophysiology, diagnoses, and management of the most common clinical situations. The Fifth Edition updates all diagnostic and therapeutic information and increases the number of illustrations and x-rays. Detailed coverage of when to hospitalize a patient can be found in the management sections of each chapter. The STD and HIV/AIDS chapters have been heavily modified for this edition, and there is also expanded coverage of genetics, geriatrics, and transplantation. A must have for medical students and residents.

FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center)Description: Medical students, family practitioners, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants will appreciate this well-written fifth edition paperback. The strength of this book is the clear and rational way the material is presented. Tables of tumor staging, abnormal radiographs, and black-and-white photographs of blood smears for different anemias are helpful to the budding diagnostician.Purpose: The purpose is to provide medical facts in a cogent manner in a quick digestible form. Medical students should find this book very handy to keep on the wards when working up their patients.Audience: Medical students, nurses, family practitioners, and physician assistants are the target audiences for the book.Features: I hope the written product reflects the authors' lecture and verbal teaching skills. This is definitely one of the better books in its clear and meaningful discussion of treatment and it is excellently written. Unfortunately, it is rather heavy to snuggle up to in the call room: it will give you chest pain and sore arms trying to prop it up in bed to read. I would have liked more room in the margins to make notes. I can't believe that the skin is completely ignored; it reminds me of medical school days when dermatology was an elective and not a core course. You could complete your medical school training and never learn about dermatology.Assessment: This is a very good book for medical students. It provides a strong clinical approach to diagnosing and understanding general internal medicine. The color highlighted tables arehelpful for differential diagnosis and management. $37.50 is a very good price for the book.
