FROM THE CRITICS

Joel R. Meyer

This is a remarkably comprehensive neuroimaging book that covers the skull, brain, spine, and spinal cord. The book is divided into five parts: brain development and congenital malformations; cerebral vasculature, normal anatomy and pathology; brain tumors and tumorlike processes; infection, white matter abnormalities, and degenerative diseases; and spine and spinal cord. The author has definitely succeeded in her goal of integrating anatomy, pathology, and multimodality imaging manifestations of CNS diseases in a format that will be welcomed by residents, fellows, practicing physicians, and clinical neuroscientists. Despite the increasing complexity of neuroradiology, the book is a pleasure to read, and it contains a wealth of practical information for anyone involved with interpretation of neuroradiological studies. Dr. Osborn is an internationally recognized neuroradiologist who is particularly well known for her interest and expertise in teaching. Her prior textbooks are classics in neuroradiology. The book is filled with superb illustrations, many of which have correlative pathological images. The references are complete, with several dated within three months of publication of the book. The line drawings, tables, and inserts are extremely useful and will undoubtedly be used as study aids for residents and fellows preparing for board examinations. Although it is difficult to consider writing a relatively comprehensive textbook on diagnostic neuroradiology, Dr. Osborn has created an outstanding book that I would strongly recommend to residents, fellows, practicing radiologists, and others involved in neuroradiology. This book will almost certainly be constantly signed out inradiology and medical school libraries, so anyone with interest in the field should seriously consider purchasing his or her own copy.
