Writing in the Feminine in French and English Canada: A Question of Ethics

SYNOPSIS

Carriére (French, U. of New Brunswick) reads the work of five feminist writers from Quebec and English Canada: Nicole Brossard, France ThÉoret, Di Brandt, Erin MourÉ, and Lola Lemire Tostevin. She explores their shared feminist ethics as well as instances of its breakdown in a diversity of postmodern poetic styles, and traces and compares the different Canadian traditions influencing them. Themes include the "negative otherness" of the mother-daughter relationship, other deconstructions of the maternal model, and transcendental conceptions of self.
