FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
Many people consider the merry-go-round a simple child's diversion, but classic examples of carousel animals offer some of the most significant carving of the last century. White, a master carver whose work is featured in Applebee's restaurants worldwide, offers a fascinating history of this art form and then shows readers how to carve their own miniature or full-sized animals. Well-known styles, including Philadelphia, Coney Island, and County Fair, are described with color photos of numerous examples, both historical and by White. Also included are lists of amusement parks that own working examples of each type. Most historic carousels featured only horses, but White's modern designs boast a velociraptor, shark, hummingbird, and butterfly. His clear instructions and excellent photos take readers through design and layout, the glue-up of blocks of wood, carving, detail work, and finishing. This excellent title celebrates the history of a classic art form and does a great job of making it accessible to woodworkers of all experience levels. Recommended for most collections.
