The more than 500 dictionary entries profile the significant persons, places, and events, as well as the political institutions and the economic and social achievements that are important to understanding Angola's history. For additional information, three appendices provide the name changes of places in Angola, the portfolios of the government, and an overview of Angola's oil production. The comprehensive bibliography concludes and complements this work with a selection of older works, and an emphasis on newer works written after 1990, as well as a useful selection of Internet sources, private sources, newspapers, and journals.

Historical Dictionary of Angola

FROM THE PUBLISHER

This historical dictionary features a detailed chronology of the significant events of Angola over the past several centuries; an extensive list of acronyms and abbreviations in both English and Portuguese; maps; and an introductory essay explaining the richness of the land, its early history, and the current political, social, and economic conditions of its people. More than 500 entries profile the significant people, places, and events of Angola, as well as the political institutions and the economic and social achievements important to understanding the country's history. Three appendixes provide changes to Angolan place names, a listing of the members of Angola's government as of September 2003, and an overview of the country's oil production. A comprehensive bibliography concludes and complements this dictionary with a selection of older works but an emphasis on those published after 1990, along with various Internet sources, private materials, newspapers, and journals.

SYNOPSIS

Presenting some 500 cross-referenced entries from "Abra A Funda<,c>ã>o da Sociedade" (the George Soros-funded Open Society Foundation) to the "Zambia Initiative" (a program for incorporating Angolan refugees into Zambian society), James (political science, Henderson State U.) provides a dictionary that concentrates on Angola's political history in the modern era. As in other volumes of this series, he also provides an introductory historical essay, a chronology, a smattering of maps, and a topical bibliography. A trio of appendixes provide information on selected place-name changes, the personnel of 2003's Government of Unity and National Reconciliation, and statistics on barrels of oil production from 1992 to 2003.
