From Publishers Weekly
Iooss, a veteran photographer for Sports Illustrated, has bundled more than 40 years of beautiful photography into an uninspired collection. Arranged roughly chronologically, nearly all of the photos are of the game's most recognizable players—Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicholaus, Lee Trevino, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. A few miscellaneous shots of less famous golfers and gaping spectators are scattered throughout, which only makes them seem like afterthoughts. Iooss has a knack for capturing the players in revealing moments both on the course and off, and many of the pictures are truly striking and iconic. Others, however, are either portraits or staged publicity shots that appear misplaced, even boring in comparison. The pictures are memorable, yet the layout does little more than display them. Pictures frequently spill across pages and are cropped in unusual ways. In a few instances, the design adds depth to the presentation—such as when two photos of Jack Nicholaus (one taken in 1966, the other in 1977) are displayed on facing pages, showing an ageless expression and swing. The collection would have been greatly improved by adding short descriptive passages. Rick Reilly's glib introduction provides some minimal historical context. However, while pictures are purportedly worth a thousand words, this book could have used a few more of the latter. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Book Description
Following on the success of his Classic Baseball, America's greatest sports photographer is back with a book that chronicles some of the most memorable moments in the history of golf. Through photographs taken over the last 40 years, Walter Iooss Jr. communicates the anticipation and tension, the focus and concentration, the heartbreak and victory of the world of golf. Augmenting Iooss's unforgettable images of players, tournaments, and courses is an introduction by best-selling sports writer Rick Reilly. From Arnold Palmer in his prime during the 1960s, to Jack Nicklaus, who stepped up to challenge Palmer and then dominated the sport through the early 1980s, to Tiger Woods, who exploded every record set by his predecessors, Iooss covered golf during its most exciting era. In telling photographs he reveals the intensity and austerity of Ben Hogan, the charisma and humor of Lee Trevino, the swagger of Chi Chi Rodriguez, and the compact style of Gary Player. Iooss was also one of the few photographers to turn his lens on the crowd, showing us the rapt attention of golf fans. Together, Iooss and Reilly capture the spirit and style of championship golf.

Library Journal

Like people, some sporting events photograph better than others. Golf, clearly, is on the more photogenic side, and while every sport features its own personalities, golf is distinct in that venue plays a pivotal role, making a golf match as much between the player and the course as it is among players. Here Sports Illustrated's Iooss (Sporting Life: The Journals of Walter Iooss Jr.) presents several decades of memorable golf moments he has captured. In addition to catching the exuberance of a well-played shot or the intensity of a make-or-break putt, Iooss adds a human dimension: Jack Nicklaus as a "Blues Brother"; Lee Trevino with his children; and Nicklaus and Palmer in the clubhouse at Latrobe. While there may be a temptation to term this lush work a coffee-table book, it will be valued by most serious golfers, particularly as some of the golfers featured in the book retire to legendary status. Recommended for public libraries with general sports collections.-Steven Silkunas, North Wales, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
