Book Description
You can run, but you can't hide...The thinking outdoorsman's handbook to the heebie-jeebies, this third volume of our Campfire Collection gathers thirteen terrifying tales of alien abductions, encounters, and freakish forays into the unknown. Perfect to read aloud around a fire or in the comfort and "relative safety" of a cozy armchair, Thrilling, Chilling Tales of Alien Encounters offers stories from such masters of fright as Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, Damon Knight, and more. Designed with rounded corners, a durable cover, and large type for easy reading by campfire or flashlight, this rugged companion is more than trail-ready for any excursion. With an unnerving introduction by Michael Berry, science fiction and fantasy book reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle, this creepy collection confirms that sinking feeling that something is just...not...quite...right....

Quite a few "girl's guide to surfing" books have been published recently. These books must balance general surfing advice and instruction with information particular to the girl surfer. This work by McCloud (the "Glow Guide" series) is not particularly girl-centered, with the exception of quotes from and illustrations of girl surfers. One does not get the impression that the author has much surfing experience, although the book jacket says that she wrote it on an eight-month surfing safari. This rather short book overemphasizes surf lingo for the beginning surfer but misses the mark on surf culture and doesn't capture the spirituality of surfing. There is a lot of white space in the book's layout, making the 144 pages of content even thinner. Louise Southerden's recent Surf's Up: The Girl's Guide to Surfing is a far better purchase for the beginning girl surfer. Not recommended.-Christina L.
