Reviewer: Anne M. Barger, DVM, MS (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)Description: In this fourth edition of a veterinary laboratory medicine book, three editors and 18 authors present 13 chapters focusing on basic clinical pathology concepts. Written in outline format, the book concludes with 35 case descriptions covering a wide range of diseases and laboratory abnormalities. The previous edition was published in 1994. Purpose: The purpose is to assist in the comprehension and interpretation of laboratory data in health and disease. General clinical pathology textbooks are an excellent reference in veterinary school and in clinical practice. This book is necessary and the authors clearly meet their objectives. Audience: This is an excellent introduction to clinical pathology as well as supplement to existing clinical pathology knowledge. The audience is primarily students, but it is a good reference for interns, residents and private practitioners. The editors are highly credible in this field. Features: The focus involves interpretation of hematology and chemistry values from all organ systems i.e. liver, GI, renal etc. There is more detail than in previous editions, but the amount of information is not overwhelming. In particular, the chapters on endocrine disorders and water, electrolyte and acid-base take complicated subjects and break them down in an understandable and systemic fashion. All of the chapters contain helpful summary tables and diagrams to assist comprehension of complex topics. As is true with many clinical pathology texts, more color plates would be beneficial, though the quality of the pictures included is good. Additionally, many references are listed at the end of each chapter though they are not linked to a particular statement so it is difficult to link information to a reference if further explanation is needed. Assessment: This is an enjoyable book to read. The level of detail is much increased and updated over the last edition. The information provided is comparable to other books in this field, including Stockham and Scott's Fundamentals of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (Iowa State Press, 2002) and Meyer and Harvey's Veterinary Laboratory Medicine: Interpretation and Diagnosis, 2nd Edition (W. B. Saunders, 1998).
