FROM THE CRITICS

School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-These easy biographies focus on the careers of two prolific authors. Although Bunting had fallen in love with the written word as a child in her native Northern Ireland, it was not until her own children were teenagers in California that she began to have her writing published. Yolen moved from city to city for most of her life. While she was working for a publisher in New York City, her love for words led to the writing and publishing of her first book, Pirates in Petticoats. These biographies are excellent companions for author studies in the library or classroom, and they can be used to jump-start reader interest in the authors' work. Each book is filled with vintage black-and-white and full-color photographs of the subjects from early childhood to the present. Reprints of book covers, illustrations, and excerpts from the authors' works are also found throughout. A brief interview is included in each title.-Christine E. Carr, Lester C.
