From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-These books give detailed explanations of the countries' geography, history, government, economy, religion, cultural aspects, and major sites of interest. Chock-full of valuable information, they are accompanied by lively, bright, and glossy photographs. Both reveal the mixture of traditional and contemporary life that permeates these societies. An "at a glance" page gives fast facts about the country. The glossary is especially useful as it has an explanation of unfamiliar English words, as well as those in the particular country's language. However, a pronunciation guide for the word "Myanmar" is never given. Also, in Indonesia, names such as Megawati Sukarnoputri lack pronunciation guidance. Despite this inconsistency, readers will be rewarded with a sense of the past experiences that these countries endured and an up-to-date perspective of their current situations.Alida F. FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Childrens Literature
Myanmar, known to many as Burma, is a country that is struggling--politically, socially, and economically. It is a land rich in tradition, but deep in turmoil. The military dictatorship pervades much of the country's culture and people. This book, part of the "Countries of the World" series, informs the reader of all Myanmar's complexities and wonders, making it an interesting yet challenging study. The book is organized well with an overview first and then a more detailed accounts. One learns about Myanmar's festivals, religions, resources, and arts. However, so much of Myanmar's culture is suppressed by the military that its dictatorship is referenced on almost every page. This can be somewhat confusing for young readers. The book is best used with older students and with teacher guidance and instruction. New topics are introduced on every other page and colorful photographs accompany each topic. There is a map, index, glossary, and page of resources at the end of the book to assist students with their research. 2000, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 11 to 16, $26.60.
