FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

This sturdy Smyth-sewn, 96-page book with its tough library binding is part of a series entitled "Countries of the World". Over 90 full color pictures bring the Scandinavian country of Finland to life for young readers. Information is presented in brief three and four paragraph sections with titles such as "Geography," "Art," "History," "Fishing and Water Sports," "Castles," "Food," "Leisure" and "Festivals." Each picture has an informative caption and has been chosen to enhance the text. The long dark days of winter and equally long light nights of summer are explained and pictured. As a reference tool for a school geography project or as a source of information about family heritage, this book would be an excellent choice for elementary and middle school libraries. 2001, Gareth Stevens, $22.60. Ages 9 to 14. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
