Nanette Savard elegantly and enthusiastically reads this nontraditional Western about a Christian woman's spiritual and emotional journey as she learns to live as a Kiowa woman. Adrianne Chastain, as portrayed by Savard and Haseloff, is a '90s-type woman--strong, independent, and outspoken. When Adrianne expresses her feelings and opinions, the war chief Satanta frequently tells her, "You are not pleasant in the morning." Savard's tempo is slow, and her volume is soft but clear. She enacts both lead characters majestically and with dignity even when they're in compromising positions. An outstanding performance of a unique story makes this a memorable listening experience. From Booklist
This prequel to Haseloff's Kiowa Verdict, winner of the 1997 Western Writers of America's Spur Award, fleshes out the story of beautiful widow Adrianne Chastain and her abductor, Kiowa war chief Satanta. (Haseloff's interest in white women who were carried off by Indians is not surprising, given that her parents named her for Cynthia Ann Parker, said to be the best known of nineteenth-century female captives.) A thirtysomething rancher, Chastain, both a mother and a grandmother, sees her daughter and one of her granddaughters killed in an Indian raid. She, her young son, and two other granddaughters are captured. Her son is subsequently killed by Satanta, and one of the granddaughters is taken away by a band of Comanches, the Kiowa's allies. Written with great sensitivity and strength, Haseloff's story deals with Chastain's life among the Kiowas; her feelings for her abductor and his feelings for her; and Satanta's eventual capture, imprisonment, and death. It is a fascinating tale well told. Budd Arthur
Satanta's Woman FROM THE PUBLISHER
It was during the War Between the States that the Comanches and Kiowas decided to rid their land of invaders forever. War chief of the Kiowa, Satanta, has set his sights on Adrianne Chastain. Much of Adrianne's family is killed in the raid that follows, and she, her son, and two granddaughters are taken captive. How a fierce war chief and Adrianne, a Christian gentlewoman, come to love one another is an incredible story.
