From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up-Porter's stories, written in the 1930s, describe universal themes and continue to appear in anthologies. Her interesting, colorful life is reflected in the lives of her female characters, many of whom are, like her, survivors. This slim volume begins with biographical details about the author, followed by critical analysis and bibliographic information on four of her short works: "Flowering Judas," "Old Mortality," "Pale Horse, Pale Rider," and "The Grave." For each one, a plot summary, a list of characters, and critical analyses by a half dozen leading critics are presented. Both early and later reviews of each work are included as well as statements by the author. The index consists of a list of themes, ideas, and titles. This book is a good source of criticism for these stories.-Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PACopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
