SYNOPSIS
Coauthors of Maples of the World (1999), a father and son who own a century-old Dutch nursery, showcase the diversity of these back-in-vogue shrubs that have the ability to change color per soil amendments. Entries describing some 1000 species include photos, flower color (in neutral conditions), breeder, parentage, and candid evaluations of growth habit (e.g., one cultivar is described as being "a weak and untidy shrub"). Appendices offer data on genetic analysis for differentiating species, and a list of plants that are mis- identified as Hydrangea, no longer in cultivation, or for which there is little information available in English.
