FROM THE CRITICS
Amanda Tauscher
This is an updated version of a handbook first published in 1992. It is a comprehensive source of essential clinical pathology data presented in a format that can be quickly referenced. The purpose is to provide physicians and other healthcare professionals with a succinct reference. In addition, it could serve as a primary educational resource for medical students and students in allied health professions. There is an adequate amount of information on a wide variety of subjects; thus the editors fulfill their purpose. They emphasize the clinical significance of each test and also provide explanations linked to current basic science data. This book is written for medical students, physicians, and others who work in laboratory medicine. It is well-suited for this audience. A wide range of subjects found under the umbrella of clinical pathology are covered. The book is divided into 36 chapters on topics such as electrolytes, blood gases, urinary tests, serum proteins, tumor markers, cytogenetics, hemostatic disorders, and infectious diseases. As such, the book serves as a "one-stop shop" on a spectrum of topics ranging in nature from general (statistics, decision making, sample collection, etc.) to disease-specific (DIC, hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, etc.). The book has many tables that allow for quick access to usable information. A very useful didactic feature is the "key points" given at the beginning of each chapter. The references are up-to-date and the index is useful. This is an improved version of a good book. The alterations and additions are a reflection of recent changes in the field of clinical pathology. The book is precisely what a handbook should be --user-friendly and all-inclusive. In addition, the student or physician is provided with sufficiently detailed, clear explanations that are applicable to the practice or study of clinical and laboratory medicine.
