From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6?Each of these titles features 10 inspirational stories. Gonzales focuses on the people and their accomplishments, not the disease; she includes men and women from varied ethnic groups, social stata, and sexual orientations. With the exception of "Magic" Johnson, all of her subjects are deceased. Jeffrey profiles individuals whose innovations range from lasers and microchips to videotape recorders and the Super Soaker water gun. She looks at each inventor's most famous project, along with other noteworthy work and briefly touches on personal information. Both titles include numerous quotes, most of which are taken from newspapers and popular magazines. Each chapter contains a couple of clear black-and-white photographs. Both books are current and interesting enough for recreational reading as well as for brief reports and preliminary research.?Linda Gray, Tyler Public Library, TXCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 6^-10. Part of Enslow's Collective Biographies series, this focuses on 10 individuals who have helped the world better understand the AIDS virus and how it affects people. From Ryan White, the young hemophiliac whose fight to attend school in spite of his disease was the nation's first true introduction to AIDS education, to Magic Johnson, whose return to the NBA is causing us to re-think much of what we have believed about AIDS, these biographies unobtrusively but effectively illustrate the education of a nation through the lives of some very brave people. Unlike most other books about AIDS, this contains little clinical information about the disease or its transmission. Rather, it is about individuals faced with a fatal disease and the choices they make, many of which involve educating the public about the disease, as they give their final years meaning. A well-done, welcome perspective. Chapter notes appended. Frances Bradburn
